The inspiration for this recipe comes from an episode of Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations. Anthony travels to Finland and hangs out in a gym with a bunch of Finnish meatheads and this soup is their postworkout meal. I thought it was comically different than the wheatgrass, protein, and steroid smoothies in US gyms. It also looked quite tasty on a cold day.

I used three recipes for guidance: skipped the cabbage, used rice instead of rolled oats – which apparently is traditional and I avoided personal injury by having C cut the rutabaga. For a hearty accompaniment I made black bread (recipe in another post).
